Field Note: Juvenile Coho Salmon detections in an Unnamed Tributary to the Smith River, Smith River, California. Objectives: Establish baseline juvenile salmonid distribution throughout the stream section occurring below Fred Haight Drive and identify any possible migration barriers. The last fish (winter steelhead) entered the trap on May 1, and on May 5 the weir was removed and the trap decommissioned.
Total numbers of adult salmonids trapped in the West Fork Smith River are shown in Table 1. All wild coho salmon and winter steelhead. The estimate of steelhead spawners is the lowest since monitoring began in the West Fork Smith River (Table 5 in Summary of Findings, below).
Juvenile Out-Migrant Trap Operation The juvenile out-migrant trap was installed in the West Fork Smith River on February 2 and removed on June 15 when low stream-flows precluded further operation.
Some populations of coho, Chinook (both fall and spring run) and summer steelhead are found in the lower reaches of the river, primarily in California.
The North Fork provides seven miles of near-pristine steelhead spawning and rearing 2004 book and is a significant source of the high-quality water on which the anadromous fishery of the Smith.
